Neptune was found by the astronomers.
How did the discovery of Neptune take place?
A French astronomer named Urbain-Jean-Joseph Le Verrier recommended Neptune as the eighth planet from the sun. He determined the planet's approximate location by observing Uranus' motions that were disturbed by gravity. Le Verrier told Galle of his observations on September 23, 1846, and that same evening, at their Berlin observatory, Galle and his assistant Heinrich Louis d'Arrest recognized Neptune. It was proven to be a planet after 24 hours of observing its movement in relation to the background stars.
The name of the blue gas giant honors the Roman sea god and has a diameter four times that of Earth. It contains a ring system with three brilliant and two dark rings and eight known moons, the largest of which is Triton. It takes 165 years for it to complete one orbit around the sun.
