The answer is desmosomes. These are inter-cellular hyper-adhesive between cells that prevent easy tear from mechanical stress.  They bestow mechanical strength to tissue. They are found in tissues such as the cardiac tissue and epithelia. Desmosomes are composed of intermediate filaments.
