In 1957, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference was founded at the Ebenezer Baptist Church by sixty black activists. Their primary goal was to carry on the success of the Montgomery bus boycott of 1955-1956 with movements throughout the country. The Southern Christian Leadership Conference named Martin Luther King, Jr. as its leader.
