In the year 2005 the French and the Dutch were the two European groups rejected an EU treaty that would have provided for an EU constitution. This treaty was prepared with the intention of creating a compact constitution guiding all the European states. This treaty was created in the year 2004 and then ratified by 18 members in the year 2005. The main objection came from the French and the Dutch and they rejected to sign this treaty. This actually killed the ratification process. After reflecting on the pros and cons of this treaty, it was replaced by Treaty of Lisbon later on.
