Liberalism was founded on equality and liberty whereas Conservatism tends to follow traditional values. In the US, for example, the Democrats are more liberal in general whereas the Republicans are usually conservative. An example of a highly debated issue in which liberals and conservatives would have differing views is gun control and gun legislation.
