Ivan III, or Ivan The Great, was the Grand Prince of Moscow and Rus, the region where the European section of Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus sits. He made much of the Kremlin in Moscow and laid the foundations of the Russian State. He did so by ending tribute payments to the Mongols. At that time Rus was a subject to the Mongol Empire and thus have to pay tributes or else face annihilation from the Golden Horde. Ivan raised an army and faced the Golden Horde in a standoff on the Ugra River in 1480. The Golden Horde retreated in the standoff, giving victory to Ivan III.
