There are currently two main branches, sunni and shia. Sunni is the most practiced branch of islam and follows the prophet muhammad. Shia is less followed and they follow Ali

"Submission to God's will" is the meaning of the word "Islam." Muslims are those who follow Islam. Muslims are monotheists who believe in a single, all-knowing God, known in Arabic as Allah.

The three groups within Islam are:

1. Sunni Muslims follow Muhammad's lead.

2. Shias believe that the leader should be Muhammad's descendant.

3. Sufis live in poverty and devote their lives to a spiritual path.

Despite the fact that three main sects of Islam, Sunni, Shia, and Sufi agree on most of the essential principles and practices of Islam, there has been a deep schism between them for over 14 centuries.  

• The schism began with a disagreement about who should succeed Prophet Muhammad as head of the Islamic faith he founded.
