On the 29th of May 1999, after the elections, General Abdulsalami Abubakar handed over to a former military General  - Ex-president Olusegun Obasanjo, thus marking the return of power to a civilian regime.

Who is Olusegun Obasanjo?

Also known as a Chief, Olusegun Matthew Okikiola Aremu Obasanjo, a GCFR, is a leader, general statesman, and diplomat who served both during the Military Dispensation as a head of state between 1976 to 1979.

He also served as a civilian leader from 1999 to 2007. He handed over after the general elections to Umaru Yar'Adua.
