Spanish speakers use "tu" and "usted" which both mean "you" to convey the formality of a relationship. "Tu" is less formal than "usted". You use "tu" when you're talking to someone of the same age, same rank, same educational level. (Example: friends/peers, younger siblings, cousins etc.)
"Usted" is more respectful way of talking to someone, such as new acquaintance, older person, or someone you consider a higher rank or anyone you wish to show respect. (Example: parents/grandparents, teachers, elders etc.)
