In the story "The Cask of Amontillado" Montresor is an example of an unreliable character. Montresor is our narrator, and because of this, we are able to follow the development of the story from his point of view. However, we quickly realize that this point of view is quite twisted and unreliable. Montresor is aware of his crimes, but he brags about them. Moreover, his impulses for revenge are outside of the ordinary. Therefore, as the reader, we are inclined to not think of Montresor as reliable.
