Where does most of the world's population tend to settle?
near mountain valleys
wherever the herds move

far from potential flood zones
Historically the civilization has been developed along the river valleys and these are places of the fertile lands that have the potential to grow crops and bodies of water can be a river, sea or a lake.
As the population tends to settle in those lands that have an adequate supply of drinking water to cook.
As a place that is too high or too extreme climatic zone are not habitable zones for the population. This the river valleys and the low lands are long seen as the places of human habitation.
