So, we know that she has currently ran 8 miles. Now Allison has m miles left to run. 

We want to find out how many miles she has left. So, if she currently has ran 8, and has m miles left, how do we find out what she has left to run?

Well, we'd subtract 8 from the total amount of miles left! So this would look like m - 8.
