Answer:

Lawnchair Larry Walters: The Man Who Was Tied to Balloons.

Larry Walters, also known as Lawnchair Larry, gained notoriety for his unconventional adventure in 1982. Inspired by his childhood dream of flying, Larry came up with a unique idea to take to the skies using a lawn chair attached to helium-filled weather balloons.

On July 2, 1982, Larry prepared for his flight by tying 45 helium-filled weather balloons to his lawn chair. With a parachute, a CB radio, and some sandwiches for sustenance, he embarked on his unusual journey from San Pedro, California. Larry intended to float around at a height of a few hundred feet, but his plan quickly went awry.

The balloons lifted him much higher than expected, reaching an altitude of approximately 15,000 feet. Although Larry had initially planned to control his flight with a pellet gun that could burst the balloons, he realized that he had forgotten it at home. As a result, he was at the mercy of the wind.

During his flight, Larry unintentionally drifted into the airspace of Los Angeles International Airport, causing a commotion among pilots and air traffic controllers. Fortunately, he managed to avoid any collisions with aircraft and safely descended after approximately two hours.

Larry's daring escapade received significant media attention, earning him the nickname "Lawnchair Larry." While his adventure was certainly unusual, it also served as a reminder of the human spirit's desire for exploration and the lengths some individuals are willing to go to fulfill their dreams.
