The circulatory system plays a crucial role in oxygen transport throughout the body. In both animals with lungs and gills, the circulatory system helps transport oxygen from the respiratory organs to the body tissues and removes carbon dioxide, a waste product of cellular respiration. In animals with lungs, oxygen-rich blood is pumped by theheart to the rest of the body through arteries, while oxygen-depleted blood returns to the lungs to pick up fresh oxygen. In animals with gills, oxygen-poor blood is pumped by the heart to the gills, where it picks up oxygen from the water, and oxygen-rich blood is then distributed to the body tissues.
