While nine of the British colonies had CHURCHES ESTABLISHED BY THE LAW, by 1790 only two remained and our presidential elections during this decade featured major candidates who were not, by modern definitions, CHRISTIANS. They were George Washington, John Adams, and Thomas Jefferson.
