To work this out you need to use the hypotenuse,

[tex] a^{2} + b^{2} = 8^{2} [/tex],
Or simplify to:
[tex]2 * a^{2} = 64[/tex]

Which can be halved:
[tex] a^{2} = 32[/tex]
Which the root of 32 is 5.7.
So the answer is 5.7 miles.
