Postwar Germany offered particularly fertile soil to popular-based antisocialist movements of national revival. Germans had been shaken to their roots by defeat in 1918. The pplummet in German fortunes the bold Great Power of 1914 to the stunned, hungry loser of 1918 shattered national pride and self-confidence.
Europe was a fertile environment for Fascism in the early 20th century because:
- Economic hardships
- General discontent in government
As a result of the first World War, Europe saw widespread devastation and the cost of the war crippled a lot of her economies. Added to this, the Great Depression of 1929 - 1932 led to widespread unemployment and poverty in many areas.
This led to people becoming disillusioned with the government because they blamed them for the economic hardships so much so that when Fascism was offered as an alternative, some people took it.
This was true for Germany and Italy. Germany was especially hard hit by the First World War and the Great Depression and Italy had been suffering reduced levels of production.
The people of both countries therefore welcomed Fascism in the form of National Socialism (Nazi) in Germany and the Fascist party of Italy under Benito Mussolini.
In conclusion therefore we can say that the economic hardships and disillusionment with the government led to the emergence of fascism.
