The tone poem Also spake Zarathustra was written by Richard Strauss, who said it was "freely based on Friedrich Nietzsche.
Thus Spake Zarathustra, also known as Also Spoke Zarathustra: A Book for All and None (German: Also spake Zarathustra: Ein Buch für Alle und Keinen), is a work of philosophical fiction published by German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche between 1883 and 1885. Except for a few phrases, Nietzsche is not concerned with any particular connection between the protagonist and the historical Zoroaster. The majority of the book is made up of speeches by Zarathustra on a range of topics, most of which conclude with the phrase "Thus spake Zarathustra.” On page 342, which is quite similar to page 1 of "Zarathustra's Prologue" in Thus Spoke Zarathustra, the figure of Zarathustra first appeared in Nietzsche's previous book The Gay Science.
