Act II, scene 1: In his garden, Brutus walks back and forth. He murmurs to himself that Caesar will have to die as he orders his servant to fetch him a lamp.
He is positive that Caesar will be crowned king, but he wonders whether Caesar won't become corrupted by his position of authority.
Although he acknowledges that he has never witnessed Caesar be influenced by power in the past, he thinks it would be difficult for Caesar to get to such heights without ultimately growing to despise those of lower position. In order to "kill him in the shell," Brutus decides to equate Caesar to the egg of a serpent "which, hatched, would as his type grow wicked."
In response to Cinna's request, Cassius asks him to deliver an accusatory letter to Brutus. Cassius is convinced by Cinna's request that he will return to Pompey's Theatre and wait for him there.
