A canyon or gorge is a deep fissure between escarpments or cliffs that forms over the course of geologic time due to weathering and the erosive action of a river. Natural erosion by rivers overlying surfaces progressively wears away rock layers as silt is carried away downstream. A river bed progressively rises to a baseline height that corresponds to the elevation of the body of water that the river empties into. When the river's headwaters and estuary are at dramatically different altitudes, weathering and erosion will result in the formation of canyons, especially in areas where softer rock strata are interspersed with harder, more weather-resistant layers.
