An exception to the rule in eastern Europe, the Communist ruler Tito (Josip Broz, 1892-1980) established a fairly independent, non-Soviet Communist state in Yugoslavia.
After Josip Broz Tito and his communist-led Partisans assisted in freeing the nation from German domination in 1944–1945, Socialist Yugoslavia was established in 1946. Despite having a federal structure, the new state was initially very politically and economically centralised, with Tito's Communist Party of Yugoslavia firmly in control and a constitution that was very similar to the Soviet Union's.
After Tito's passing in 1980, the presidency of the federation was handed to an awkward rotating collective presidency of regional delegates. Tito had been given the position for life in 1974.
