The Nashville belle turned social worker who founded the Nashville relief society (later renamed united charities) after the 1881 Cumberland river flood was Fannie Battle.
Fannie Battle, a Confederate spy and social reformer, was born on the family's property in the Cane Ridge neighborhood. She attended the Nashville Female Academy for her education. In the Confederate army, her father and brothers enrolled and participated in the battles of Fishing Creek, Fort Donelson, and Shiloh.
The Cumberland River overflowed in December 1881. Battle founded the Nashville Relief Society after meeting with the city's authorities in order to aid the impoverished flood victims who were living in flood zones close to the river. Clothing, food, and coal were given to over a thousand people.
