Gunter Rambow lives in two different universes. He was raised in the postwar communist German Democratic Republic after being born in the Prussian town of Neustrelitz in Mecklenburg, Germany, in 1938. He relocated to the West in 1954, a few years before the Berlin Wall was constructed, and received training as a glass painter before enrolling in the graphic program at the Hochschule für bildende Kunste in Kassel.
Later, he would spend nearly two decades as a professor of graphic design and visual communication at the university in the same city. He is currently an instructor of visual communication at Karlsruhe's brand-new Hochschule für Gestaltung. Gunter Rambow established his own design studio at the age of twenty-two while still a student.
