In economics, the tragedy of the commons is a situation where individual users, who have open access to a resource without being constrained by formal rules governing use and access, act independently depending on their own self-interest and, against the interests of all users, cause resource depletion through their uncoordinated action. The British economist William Forster Lloyd used the implications of unrestricted grazing on common land (also called "common") in Great Britain and Ireland as a hypothetical example in an essay he wrote in 1833 to introduce the idea. Following a 1968 paper by Garrett Hardin, the idea gained widespread recognition as "tragedy of the commons" around a century later.
The Tragedy of the Unmanaged Commons, rather than "The Tragedy of the Unmanaged Commons," was the title of Hardin's later retractions of his original thesis in the face of historical and contemporary commons data.
