"x" is the name of the number that satisfies the equation. We, of course, do not know that the value of this number is, only we know that this number + 4 is 2 times this number - 5.
Taking a guess for the possible value of x is hard on the brain, but fortunately, we have methods of algebra to help us.
The first step is to subtract 4 from both sides of the equation. Doing this gives us
[tex]x=2x-9[/tex]Now we need to subtract 2x from both sides. This gives
[tex]-x=-9[/tex]And multiplying both sides by -1 gives
[tex]x=9[/tex]which is our answer!
