Respuesta :
Substracting fractions
First, we are going to convert both into fractions:
Step 1: multiplying by the denominator
For the first :
[tex]12\frac{1}{4}[/tex]we multiply the integer by the denominator 4:
12 x 4 = 48
For the second:
[tex]5\frac{2}{3}[/tex]we multiply the integer by the denominator 3:
5 x 3 = 15
Step 2: adding the answer to the denominator
For the first:
48 + 1 = 49, then
[tex]12\frac{1}{4}=\frac{49}{4}[/tex]For the second:
15 + 2 = 17, then
[tex]5\frac{2}{3}=\frac{17}{3}[/tex]
Now, we have that:
In order to substract them, we must have the same denominator for both.
Step 3: multiplying both fractions by the denominator of the other
First fraction:
We multiply it by the denominator of the second, which is 3
[tex]\frac{49}{4}=\frac{49\cdot3}{4\cdot3}=\frac{147}{12}[/tex]Second fraction:
We multiply it by the denominator of the first, which is 4:
[tex]\frac{17}{3}=\frac{17\cdot4}{3\cdot4}=\frac{68}{12}[/tex]Now, we have that:
Step 4: substracting them
Now, we substract the numerators and keep the same denominator:
Then
[tex]12\frac{1}{4}-5\frac{2}{3}=\frac{79}{12}[/tex]Answer: 79/12
