Lord William Bentinck was the governor general of India before the Revolt of 1857 and so could not have brought in changes after this event.

Nevertheless, he was very influential in history because he brought a lot of social changes to India. He abolished Sati which was a practice of a woman having to kill herself when her husband dies. He also removed thuggee which was crimes by organized thugs.

Lord William Bentinck also reduced the rate of human sacrifices for religious events and the killing of female children.
