Assimilation refers to the process through which people or groups with different ethnic ancestries are assimilated into the dominant culture of a society.
Assimilation is the process of imitating characteristics from the dominant culture to the point when the group assimilating becomes socially indistinguishable from other members of the society. Assimilation is therefore the most extreme type of acculturation.
Although assimilation may be forced or undertaken voluntarily, it is uncommon for a minority group to completely imitate and replace its prior cultural practices; among the traits that are frequently the most resistant to change are religion, food preferences, proxemics (i.e., the physical distance between people in a given social situation), and aesthetics. Assimilation does not signify a biological or "racial" merger.
