Even while Hobbes believes that we should view our governments as having unlimited power, he grants his subjects the freedom to disobey certain of their orders. He contends that in cases where their lives are under risk, subjects have the right to rebel or confront the sovereign power in self-defense.

In situations where their families or even their honor are at risk, he also grants them what appear to be broad rights of resistance. Understandably, many who study Hobbes have been attracted by these deviations.
