During the Romanesque period, trade increased exponentially, facilitating the growth of cities and towns. This growth gradually replaced feudalism as a form of government. Feudal lords gave these cities and towns independence through charters outlining their rights and duties when economic conditions required it.
Romanesque art arose from the massive expansion of monastic life in 10th and 11th century when Europe regained some degree of political stability after the fall of the Roman Empire.
