The Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), led by national governments, WHO, Rotary International, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and UNICEF, was established in 1988 after the World Health Assembly adopted a resolution calling for the eradication of polio worldwide. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance later joined the GPEI. Since then, smallpox was eradicated globally in 1980, and polio prevalence has decreased by 99 percent worldwide. Today, the world is on the verge of eradicating a human disease completely.
Since 1988, there have been six recorded cases of wild poliovirus, down from an estimated 350 000 cases in more than 125 endemic countries at the time.
