Elongate, north-south-oriented disturbances in the trade winds that are known to sometimes result in the formation of cape Verde-type hurricanes are called: Easterly waves
A tropical wave, also known as an easterly wave, tropical easterly wave, or an African easterly wave, is a type of atmospheric trough that forms in and around the Atlantic Ocean. It is characterized by an extended region of relatively low air pressure that is north to south-oriented and moves from east to west across the tropics, producing cloud cover and thunderstorms.
Subtropical ridges or belts of high air pressure that are located north and south of the Intertropical Convergence Zone give rise to tropical waves in the easterly flow along their equator-ward sides. The dominant easterly winds along the tropics and subtropics close to the equator typically carry easterly waves westward. In the northeastern Pacific and north Atlantic basins, they may result in the development of tropical cyclones.
