Who was William Offet

He was a Black man accused of r*ping a white woman.
He was arrested, taken to court, and sentenced to jail for 15 years.
He was later released when it was discovered that he was innocent.

This is in sharp contrast to situations in the South where Black men accused of r*pe are lynched and brutalized to death. White men on the other hand who were accused of r*ping Black women, were let off with a pat on the wrist.

The example of William Offet showed that Southern White reaction was racist.
