The story of William Offet added to the structure by showing that the reactions of White Southerners to Black men being accused of r*pe was not general and was motivated by racial hatred.

Who was William Offet

  • He was a Black man accused of r*ping a white woman.
  • He was arrested, taken to court, and sentenced to jail for 15 years.
  • He was later released when it was discovered that he was innocent.

This is in sharp contrast to situations in the South where Black men accused of r*pe are lynched and brutalized to death. White men on the other hand who were accused of r*ping Black women, were let off with a pat on the wrist.

The example of William Offet showed that Southern White reaction was racist.
