The transverse tubules (t-tubules) with regards to the cardiac muscles are invaginations of the surface membrane of cardiac ventricular myocytes
With regards to skeletal muscles, are located in the space between the two Sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) cisternae.
- In Skeletal muscles, they are tightly associated with the SR controlling the entry of action potentials into interior of muscle fiber.
- In cardiac muscles, these t-tubules which are rich in ion channels and are important determinant of cardiac cell function, that are important for excitation–contraction coupling, ensuring spatially synchronous Ca2+ release throughout the cell.
