Romanticism exemplifies the importance of emotions and freedom over intellectual growth. While, Transcendentalism draws inspiration from the beyond or external to the human perspective even beyond reasoning and normal traditions. They believe that everyone should follow what they’re feeling. I can’t think of any quotes… but I hope this helps.

The author introduces that Chris went from living a normal and safe life back in West Virginia, he decides to do something out of his comfort zone and leave his home and hitchhike his way all the way to Alaska
“Chris admitted that the only food in his pack was a ten-pound bag of rice. His gear seemed exceedingly minimal for the harsh conditions of the interior which in April still lay buried under the winter snowpack. Chris’ cheap leather hiking boots were neither waterproof nor well insulated.” (5)
Chris is not too sure of what lies ahead or what to expect he know that he has to take a leap in order to do what he wants. Traveling alone and with minimal supplies, he figures that it will teach him how to work independently in a certain situation. He wanted to experience something new even if it went against what others said.

In this section, we find out Chris had already been going out in nature to hopefully one day go to Alaska on his expedition. After Chris’s parents got him a new Car that’s when Chris was at his peak and just decided to leave home.
“It was the first present she had received from her son in more than two years, since he had announced to his parents, on principle, he would no longer give or accept gifs...In the years since, he’d been in the habit of taking extended solo road trips his exact words were “I think I’m going to disappear for awhile’” (20-21)
Chris later went on to tell his parents that he would be disappearing for a whole and his parents did not make much of it. Although his family was good financially, Chris did not want to travel around the country and immerse himself in nature. He wanted to learn more about himself and so he out himself into challenging situations.
