What is the message behind the poem "Nothing Gold Can Stay"?

When things die, which they will, it is sad.

Enjoy things while they last, and while you have them.

Everything new is perfect, and the perfection can only last an hour.

It's difficult to lose things, so don't become attached, and you won't get hurt.

Ponyboy feels comfortable talking about clouds, colors, and poetry in front of Johnny and Sodapop. Who else does he feel would understand that kind of stuff?
