Germany was punished pretty heavily for losing the war and causing so much damage. They were forced to pay massive war reparations (especially France! it came to the point where their money was pretty much useless), give up territory (Belgium, Czechslovakia, Poland), they had to return territories (giving Alsace and Lorraine back to France), and ceding all of the overseas colonies (in China, Pacific, and Africa) to the allied nations. They also had to limit the size of their armed forces, and accept full responsibility for the war. Germany was humiliated to say the least.
