A dash is a punctuation mark used to emphasize a point that has been stated before, or to indicate a clever turn of thought. It can also serve as a pause that slows the reader and then indicates an important piece of information to be emphasized.
For example;
Jennifer joined the choir- a group with melodious voices.
There was an emphasis on the attribute of the choir. There was also a clever turn of thought in the speaker's line of thought.
