On election day, Frémont and the 'Know-Nothings’ candidate, former U.S. president Millard Fillmore, split the Northern vote, and Democratic candidate James Buchanan won the votes of an almost-solid South. Despite Buchanan's national victory, Republicans won many congressional seats.
