A positive correlation is a relationship between two variables in which both variables move in the same direction. ... A negative correlation is a relationship between two variables in which an increase in one variable is associated with a decrease in the other.
2. Correlation does not imply causation" (related to "ignoring a common cause" and questionable cause) is a phrase used in science and statistics to emphasize that a correlation between two variables does not automatically imply that one causes the other (though correlation is necessary)

Correlation simply means association. It shows the extent to which two variables are related.
- A positive correlation simply means that the relationship that exist between the variables is a positive one, therefore, they move in the same direction. On the other hand, a negative correlation means the variables move in the opposite direction.
- Correlation does not imply causation simply means that because there are two variables that correlate doesn't mean one thing causes the other one. For example, let's say there are two variables which are shoes and crime. The statement "there is an increase in crime rate when the sale of shoes increase". This shows that even though there's a correlation, the shoes don't have an effect on the crime rate.
