Compound nouns are nouns made up of more than one noun. They can be separated by nothing (butterfly; firehouse), by a space (White House, fire truck), or by hyphens (sister-in-law).

A compound noun contains two or more elements that have individual meanings. A compound noun may be spelled as one word, as separate words, or as a hyphenated term. A few examples of compound nouns are listed below.

Jackpot, sister-in-law, and dining room.
