3x-5y=17x+6y
-5y=14x+6y
-11y=14x
this is pretty much algebra, and it is not that complicated as u think it is.

so u need to know how to identify like terms (or variables) here. i.e. 3x and 17x are like terms, because they are both a coefficient of x. 6y and 5y are like terms, bcoz they are both coefficient of y.

so back to our problem: if u want to solve for x

3x-5y=17x+6y
we take all like terms to one side.
so -3x+17x=-5y-6y
14x=-11y
x=-11y/14

now, we need to overcome y

3x-5y=17x+6y
-5y-6y=-3x+17x
-11y=14x
so y=-14x/11

i hope i helped u and gave u a brief understanding of how to overcome these type of problems. although i did not state the value of x, the working out matters more. this method is very useful in a test or any study hw:)
