The only disadvantage of making food using photosynthesis is that photosynthesis  can take place only in the presence of sunlight. In case if there is any place where sunlight comes in very limited amount due to obstructed pathway  then it would become very difficult for a species to survive.

Such places include - deep ocean waters, beneath the earth's surface , deep dense forests which do not allow percolation of light, cold arctic regions etc.
