SWBS Chart and Reflection
Part1
The "Somebody-Wanted-But-So" chart is an excellent way to summarize important information from history. In it, you identify a person or group of people; their goal, need, or want; what conflict of interest stood in the way; and the outcome. This strategy works great because history depends on the needs, wants, and actions of humans.
President Abraham Lincoln
Wanted...
the nation to heal as quickly as possible from the Civil War and planned to reunify the nation quickly
But...
he was assassinated in 1865 only days after Robert E. Lee’s surrender
So...
plans for Reconstruction were taken over by Vice President Andrew Johnson, who became president after Lincoln’s death
President Andrew Johnson
Wanted...
to continue the reconstruction, following what President Lincoln had in place.
But...
the Radical Republicans believed he was too lenient toward the South and they believed it would not be achievable for the south to change if the previous Confederates came back to power.
So...
the Radical Republicans decided to take action, which lead them to win majority of the votes from the House and Senate in the election of fall 1866.
Radical Republicans
Wanted...
to give citizenship to African Americans and the right to vote.
But...
the Radical Republicans were worried that President Johnson’s plan for Reconstruction was not working.
So...
Congress commenced passing bills that would change the Reconstruction policy. President Johnson disapproved bills passed by Congress; however, the Republicans in congress had the capacity to override Johnson. Not long after, the congress passed the Reconstruction Act of 1867, which fixed everything Johnson and the South had done by then.
Southern Democrats
Wanted...
To be able to have a south democrat be named in the cabinet and have federal troops removed from the south.
But...
the had then Radical Republicans taken matters into their own hands and had taken authority over Congress.
So...
The Southern Democrats agreed to vote for Rutherford B. Hayes only if he would name a Southern Democrat in his cabinet and he removed all federal troops from the south. The Reconstruction came to an end once all the federal troops were removed from the south.
Part2
What was the main issue relating to Reconstruction that divided Republicans at the end of the Civil War? If you had been a member of Congress at the time, what type of plan for Reconstruction would you have supported and why?
The main issues that separated Republicans towards the end of the war was whether to keep the South from coming back to the way it was before the Civil War and those who would liked to keep the South from coming back to it’s old ways were known as The Radical Republicans. In the event that I'd been an individual from Congress by then, I would have stayed with President Johnson's plan, yet would have attempted to incorporate a percentage of the Republican's standards. I would also have attempted to talk alternate individuals from Congress to provide the Radicals what they needed without conflicting with the President. But I would have needed to comply with what the President needed while as yet trading off with the individuals. The individuals are what make a nation, so instead of going against them we need to work with them.
