This is because Esperanza has a peaceful family base, where she does not suffer any type of psychological or physical violence, which gives her the strength to pursue specific and beneficial goals.
The story of Esperanza is set in a patriarchal society. A patriarchal society is one in which the male figure dominates the females all throughout the structure of society.
What is the difference between Esperanza and the other women in House on Mango Street?
The concept of patriarchy is seen in The House on Mango Street as Esperanza - the lead character grows from being timid and shy to being bold and being able to do what she wants in that environment.
Unlike other women who are:
- Mamacita
- Rafaela
- Minerva and
- Sally
Much like Sally and very unlike Esperanza, Mamacita is also married to a man who will not allow her to leave her apartment or learn the English Language.
Rafaela also stays indoors but for a different reason. Her husband always locks her in for fear that she will run away from him.
Esperanza grows to mature emotionally and in other ways. Unlike Esperanza, Sally is not quite as bold and glamorous as Esperanza.
Minerva is similar to Esperanza in age. She is only older by two years but already, she is married with two children. Minerva's husband is seldom around but usually returns with anger.
