The United Nations (UN) is an intergovernmental organization that aims to maintain international peace and security, develop friendly relations among nations, achieve international cooperation, protecting human right, and be a center for harmonizing the actions of nations. It is the largest, most familiar, most internationally represented and most powerful intergovernmental organization in the world.(Wikipedia)
The missions of the United Nations are peacekeeping, to foster unity among the nations of the war, to provide humanitarian services. The United Nations was established after world war 11 to prevent the occurrence of future wars.
The United Nations itself was founded to reestablish the principles of state sovereignty, that had before its creation been long eroded. The United Nations ensures that its engagement with Member States is based on cooperation, transparency and respect for sovereignty.
It is pitiful that member states are now using sovereignty as a strategy for excusing human rights violation. Member States in reality are pushing for the UN to ignore national human rights violations. These States want to continue to discriminate against marginalized communities with impunity under the guise of ‘national interests’, 'sovereignty', and ‘cultural values.’ Reference source: (Egypt: Mass Arrests Amid LGBT Media Blackout, Human Rights Watch (October 6, 2017)
