The Challenger expedition was a well known expedition in History. The voyage of Charles Wyville Thomson and John Murray differ from the voyages that came before because it was first voyage that was specifically devoted to the study of marine science and it took about four years.

  • The Challenger expedition as the voyage as called took place betwwen 1872-1876. The two men that spearhead this expedition for the mission were Scottish professor Sir Charles Wyville Thomson and British naturalist Sir John Murray.

The both of them were known to  captained the HMS Challenger and gave the name oceanography.

In the Expedition, they measured different types of physical oceanographic measurements, took good information on ocean currents, the locations and profiles of coral reefs, discovered 4,717 new species etc.
