  1. There should be random mating across the population
  2. There should be no immigration of emigration
  3. The population should be infinitely large
  4. There should be no mutation occurring in the population

Nonetheless this ideal form a Hardy Weinberg hardly exists naturally because all these assumptions are not observed in virtually all populations.

Hardy Weinberg equilibrium is, however, useful in calculating the genetic and allelic frequencies of a population and is helpful in determining how a population is evolving.
