Benedict Arnold was an early American hero of the Revolutionary War who later became one of the most infamous traitors in U.S. history after he switched sides and fought for the British. Benedict Arnold met with a British major (John Andre) to discuss handing over West Point to the British, in return for the promise of a large sum of money and a high position in the British army.
