Long-term stress can cause permanent damage to the body.

Short term stress response:

  • Targets the adrenal medulla.
  • A hormone released epinephrine.
  • Triggers the fight-or-flight response.
  • Activated by neural stimuli.

Long term Stress response:

  • Targets the adrenal cortex.
  • A hormone released- Glucocorticoid.
  • Increased blood pressure, increased protein, and fat catabolism.
  • Activate hormonal stimuli.

Short term Stress:

It is the pressure that affects the body for a small period of time. For example, Headache and Anxiety.

Long term Stress:

It is the pressure that affects continuously for a long period of time. For example, Working in a toxic environment.

Adrenal gland release hormone in the response to stress. In the long term, it releases Cortisol. For short-term stress, it releases epinephrine which is responsible for fight and flight response in the body.

Therefore, For short-term stress body triggers a fight and flight response while for long-term stress body adapts its metabolism.
